The Basic Shipbuilding Knowledge Course will cover some of the following:-

 

Day one

 

An introduction to Shipbuilding and Ship repair industry

 

  • An introduction to the worldwide shipping industry, some history on the ships that were built at Sherbrooke in the late 18th century and early 19th century
  • The differences between shipbuilding yards and ship repair yards and why they are different
  • Yard locations and the major considerations in choosing a yard, the main shipbuilding areas of the World and the types of ships being built
  • Effects of weather extremes on different yards (heat, humidity and cold)
  • Labour force, skills and management
  • How a modern shipyard is laid out

 
Day two to Day five

 

 The actual Design, Lofting and Build process

 

  • How a ship is taken from a basic set of scantlings and turned into working drawings
  • How to read these working drawings and identify parts
  • Some basic geometry of a ship and how to read measurements
  • The moulded surface and moulded line conventions, frame lines waterlines and buttocks
